Number plates and registration marks

This page provides links to the requirements that apply to vehicle number plates and information about the current registration mark format. The terms number plate and registration mark are used on this site.  They have different meanings:

• Number plate means the plate fitted to a vehicle. 

• Registration mark means the characters that are shown on the number plate.
