Press release no:11 - DVLA seminars on digital tachograph smart cards

Release Date: 22/06/2005

Vehicles equipped with digital tachographs are expected to roll off production lines very soon. As part of DVLA’s responsibility to issue the smart cards used with the recording device, the Agency will host a series of free seminars over the next few months around the country on the introduction of the new digital technology.

EU legislation stated that digital tachographs would be fitted to all new vehicles from August 2004 onwards. However, digital tachographs were not available by that date and revised dates for mandatory fitting are still being negotiated. This led to uncertainty, and to make it easier for businesses to plan ahead, Ministers announced in March 2005 that arrangements would be in place in Great Britain to support the voluntary use of digital tachographs from August 2005 (equivalent arrangements for Northern Ireland will follow shortly).

DVLA, with the support of VOSA and the tachograph industry, will hold the first seminar in Swansea on 19 July 2005. Anyone in the transport industry interested in the implementation and use of digital tachographs is welcome to attend. The seminars will include detailed advice on how and when to apply for the cards, the special arrangements in place for large operators, and information on using cards to manage drivers’ hours.

Further regional seminars are planned for Glasgow, Leeds, Midlands and the South East.
