DVLA within DfT and DVO

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is an Agency within the Department for Transport (DfT). It supports delivery of DfT’s objective of ‘transport that works for everyone’ as well as other wider government priorities, such as protecting the environment, fostering social inclusion, improving efficiency and modernising public services. The agency uses its data and operations to contribute to road safety improvement, crime reduction and environmental sustainability as well as being responsible for the collection of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). It also contributes to the delivery of the government’s e-services agenda, with electronic vehicle and driver licensing.

DVLA is the largest agency within the Driver and Vehicle Operator (DVO) Group, established as a separate sponsoring directorate within DfT in 2003. The DVO group provides, through its agencies, co-ordinated strategies for delivering better services to customers, better compliance and better value for money. The other agencies are the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA).

The DVO Group mission is: ‘Promoting safe and secure drivers and vehicles on our roads'.
